AL AWN - THE GREAT HELP
A Scene from the Battle of Badr: The legendary 313 companions of Holy Prophet Muhammad faced the 1000 meccan idolaters. The very principal of Unity of God - Tauheed - was at stake. One of the companions complained to Prophet that he had no weapon to fight with. Prophet gave him a stem of date palm. It turned out to be a formidable weapon. No sword could cut it. Any Meccan confronting the companion was invariably vanquished. This weapon was rendered supreme by virtue of having been handed over by the Greatest of Apostels of Almighty. It came to be named Al-Awn, The Great Help.
We, the Muslims of the present time have also been presented with Al-Awn by our Prophet to fight against violation of Unity of God in the world at large, more so for people in the fold of Islam, and most so within our own hearts. It is our Spiritual Master, Qutbuzzaman As Sheikh Jamaliyya Syed Khaleel Awn El Hasaniyyul Hashimiy Moulana. He is physically the 34th in the line of descendants of Prophet. He is also the current torch bearer in the line of saints with
prophet at its head. It is therefore no wonder that we find in him a perfect reflection of all virtues of Prophet. He emulates Prophet (sal) perfectly as God wishes in Qur’an. And so we have a living example in flesh and blood before our eyes.
TEACHER OF ISLAM
It is futile to expect me to give a complete account the Qutb of our times. But I can certainly share some of my observations with you. Islam is the religion ordained by God to the first man and all this descendants. But it is through Muhammad that He perfected it, rendered it, complete and sdelf-sufficient in all aspects of life in this world and the hereafter. So says Allah in Scripture. However, as predicted by Prophet, by passage of time lot of confusions have been created in it by man. Every now and then God causes His religion reclarified, redefined by great saints. Our Sheikh Khaleel Awn Moulana is the one of our time. He is the Leader Perfect who Knows the way, goes the way and shows the way. When he speaks, he does on behalf of and for the sake of none but Allah and His Rasool. That epitomizes his mission.
Holy Prophet said “Awwauld deeni ma’rifatullah” i.e. the foremost thing in religion is gnosis (of God). Sheikh Khaleel Awn Moulana shows us how Allah desired this goal and how Prophet guided people to it. He conveys this to us by spoken and written words and by practice. His profound Philosophical ideas of Unity of Divinity and that of Entity are found elsewhere in this book.
Secondly, Allah and His Rasool (sal) insist also in unity of mankind, that all people are created out of one, first soul that is Adam (alai). In practice it means love, kindness, cohesiveness, help, support, fairdealing, etc. among us regardless of our colour, creed and tongue. This finds a very prominent place in Sheikh Khaleel Awn Moulana’s teachings.
Thirdly, Islam as many other religions, got stratified in practice. Some insist on ritual worship and claim that it is all in the deen and will do for redemption. They forget about the other aspect of conduct of dos and don’ts in respect of others. Some others hold that philosophical knowledge and practice are not essential to reach God; some even claim that it is not only outside the scope of Islam but also forbidden (haram). As we can see from Allah’s Qur’an and Prophet’s (sal) Hadees, this is totally untrue. here our Sheikh Khaleel Awn Moulana could be seen to echo what prophet (sal) told about irfan (gnosis). We read in “Gracious Sayings of Sheikh Awn:”
Holy Spiritual wisdom is the only path to Haqq (Reality), God can never be reached through any other means. People adopting such means are like a thirsty deer which mistakes mirage for water and chases it uselessly.
It is also great people like our exlated Sheikh who can see unity in Humanity, in Islam and in God at the same time.
GOES BY ALLAH & RASOOL
Today ambiguity the position of spirituality among the Muslims. The layman dreads or detests it because to him it is “unknown.” Also a typical fake sheikh devalues the Shariat and disregards the aspect of code of behaviour among people. Our Master gives the right emphasis due on each. The primary conditions for entering his Tareequatul Haqqiyyul Quadiriyya are: all the five bounden duties (fardh), all the prescribed six articles of Islam, daily recitation of Holy Qur’an, singing of Hymns (Raatib) and acquiring the Divine Knowledge - the last being his forte. The veracity of every word of his philosophy can ultimately be traced to Qur’an and hadees.
TAUHEED IN SIMPLE TERMS
Allah and His Rasool (sal) are clear and straight - forward in the matters of metaphysical philosophy. Yet its academic analysis unfortunately made a bugbear of it to the commoner. Our Master restored its simplicity and made it understandable to everone. This is what makes him impressive.
Some people regard tauheed (monism) as an extermely tough concept. It is not all that difficult one. It is, on the other hand, an easy and perfect one. Difficulty lies in the approach to understand it.
That is how we find the learned (alim) and the lay people, the young and the old, the sophisticated people and the simple in the fold of our Tareeqa. We find people of all walks of life among his disciples, not just religious experts and philosophers alone. The reason is that he has demystified what has been unnecessarily mystified. He has showed that family life or economic - professional life has nothing contrary to spiritual life. But then, this is what exactly been demonstrated by his Grandsire Prophet Muhammad whom God calls Goodly Example for all humanity to emulate. Like father, like son -- they sucessfully liberalized mysticism to the common people, they empowered them towards redemption.
WIDE ANGLE VIEW
Our sheikh is no hermit but a householder like all of us. He is no professional philosopher who makes a living out of preaching. Nor is he a miracle - monger. On other hand he has a high formal education and retired as a Sri lankan Government’s Principal Education Officer. He is a linguist and is especially expert in Tamil and Arabic. He is a noted literateur and writes poetry in Sangham Tamil - Which today none in the world could. One of his works won a high award from Tamil Academy of Srilanka. His Arabic astounded the experte in the Arab an itself.
He got his sufistic mentoring right from childhood from his own father Qutbul Aqtab Syed Yaseen Moulana (Rali). Being an expert in practical tasawwuf does not make him tunnel visioned. He is quite at ease with current scientific knowledge as well as prevailing world’s political and economic situation. His interpretation and critical reviews are as astonishing as his projections on them.
It is only in the year before last that he made public what ought to have been Islam’s interpretation of jihad. When the whole of Islamic world glorified terrorism and suicide bombing it was our master who disclosed that they were infact forbidden in Islam. His detailed interview appeared in Middle Eastern and Indian papers and journals and reached the whole worldvia websites.
On the other end, at micro level he is alive to the personal problems of his every disciple and makes suggestions for improved strictly within shariat limits. He guages the spiritual needs of the mureeds and caters for them.
PERSONALITY & STYLE
Sheikh Khaleel Awn Moulana does not possess an imposing person and a bombastic style of speech. He is a frail - built, soft spoken with a simple style of speaking. But the ring of Truth makes everyone a good listerner. At times he does give discourses but sufistic facts abound in his everyday conversation. They get impressed into the “listeners” mind and heart, quite often without they knowing them to be lofty and profound.
He is clad in casual wear and not in any characteristic dress of a supposed sufi. Yet the simplicity never lets anyone underestimate him, but leaves them marvelling. His type of charisma is unprecedentally strange. We can rationalize it as the result of his association with Haqq. That surely is his inheritence from Prophet .
Keeping aloof or maintaining a distance from his disciples is quite uncharacteristic of him. His hallmark is intimacy and free mixing with his disciples. But this familiarity never breeds contempt of him or creates any laxity of respect. On the other hand it makes them relaxed and at home; it makes them feel as chicks secure under mother hen’s wings. One can often share humour with him, but great truths are conveyed through it. His company makes life worth living even for the most object of his disciples. But then again, all these areb what had been happening between Prophet and his companions.
God says in Qur’an that Holy Prophet does not ask for any wages towards communicating His messages to them. Our beloved Sheikh makes incessant journeys far and wide over Asian countries and stays away from his dear family for extended periods. But it is not any professional tour for income. He had his own means of earning, back home.
If one asks me to point out the foundation of our beloved Sheikh’s teachings, I will choose “Absolute loyality to Holy Prophet” as the answer. For, I learn from the Master, it is Muhammad who showed us the True God and taught us the right and straight path - Islam. It is the art of living out fully in this world and at the same time fully utilizing it to win the hereafter. Unless one reposes perfect obedience to him one can hardly hope to realize Haqq, our Master tell us, is absolute respect and boundless love of the Rasoolul Akram and dedication of one’s own soul in his cause; an indication of this singing the maulid of exaltation (praise). That will be our acknowiedgement of meaning of his hily name: The Praised One. Our Master never hesitates, much less fails, to condemn any idea from anyone which may designify Prophet, insult him, assassinate his unblemished charaqcter, discredit Hadees or dishonour him in any other manner.
Our Sheikh demonstrates how losing oneself in his spiritual master (fana fish Sheikh) is in fact that in Prophet (fana fir Rasool), which in turn leads to that in God (fana fillah). He clearly brings forth the significance and inter - relationships among Allah, Rasool (sal), Universe, Man, creations, life, death, the hereafter, sufistic knowledge & practice, redemption, shariat, tareequrt and so on. He defines the sufi as one who is unperturbed by the good and bad which befall him equally from God; yet he never gets benummed by them and stops striving. his recent Tamil work titled “Thagi Biramam” (Water Booth for the Thirsty) is nothing less than a classic in sufistic thought. It is a book cast in a totally noveln format.
Anyone concerned with Tareeqa cannot avoid facing the questoin of bid’at (inventions). The so called bid’atul hasana (goodly novelties) have been arrived at purely as per directions of Prophet. As such finding fault with them cannot be justified at all. On the other hand a great many ideas have been invented by some in the name of purity of religion, much against what Qur’an and Hadees teach us. Imagining a form to God, attributing to him faculty of lying, denying Prophet the greatness Allah bestows on him in Qur’an, shearing o Tasawwuf off Deen while God and His Messenger have bidden it are some examples. Such are bid’at in true sense and are knows as bid’atul saiy’a.
This is nothing but satanic revolt against God. Every muslim should guard himself against this true bid’at.
WAY OF LOVE
Worship of God may be done out of fear of hell, reward of heaven or realization God’s Absoluteness. But that due to love of Allah is the truest and supreme. All these four states have been mentioned in Qur’an and Hadees. Our beloved Sheikh wants us to be ever grateful to prophet for guiding the humanity to thew way of life that the humanity ought to adopt. He observes:
The most miraculous thing is to make man lead a human life. Our Grandsire (Prophet Muhammad achieved this feast. That is Shariat.
BRIEF & LOFTY
Our beloved sheikh is known for brevity, simplicity and clarity in expressing the truths. They make a deep, everlasting impression on his hearer or reader. A few of his gems are:
o It is by wisdom (gyan) that the world gets redeemed.
o The science of knowing God...... is the same as knowing oneself.
o Destruction, death, diapperance, departure - all these are nothing but change.
o Immaculate heart is the above befitting the Omnipotent.
o One who knows the Haqq (God) is perfect man.
o Qur’an is the light that leads you to and shows you the right path.
o Will power is the goal of ife.
o Be stedfast and worry not.
o Mind which is the lifeline must allways be happy.
o Patience is a great power, ........... a great treasure.
o Falsehood, theft, usury (interest), debts, etc. are enemical to business.
o Those who are arrogant towards children are arrogant to their own souls.
o Haqq (God) is closest to the poor.
o Without Tauheed man is but a corpse that walks.
o Do not regard petty matters mountanious.
o Shun fear and acquire the sense of triumph in your hearts.
o Integrity is vital for people.
o Think good and do good. Almighty favours this.
o Anger, Jealousy and self - pride are man’s enemies that destroy him.
o Entire mankind is a single race.
I did mention that our spiritual Master is no miracle monger. But his achievement is nothing short of miracle. Through his clear explanations he has removed the fear of mysticism out of people for whose sake it is meant. Instead, he has inculcated in them the sense of awe admixed with tender love for God and His Messenger. That is how he has won over the people, the simple and the intellectuals, to sufism, the deepest level of Islamic faith. All of them are now on the path of sunnah. Miraculous still is that many a staunch denier of true Prophetism ang sufism has been converted to the right path. No heated discussions or involved argument was necessary on his part. Reading, hearing or referral of a word or two of his was enough usually; sometimes a repetation of his rationale by others achieved this. It is not true the passing glance of a grand spiritual master is sufficient to redeem a sinner? Such converts continue as his staunch supporters and preach his principal from them on.People who have heard his name or known his teachings develop a longing for him and come seeking after him. There are also mysterious instances when such seekers meet this their desire in a pleasantly surprising manner - that is at an unexpected place in an unexpected spot. Does this not prove what Moulana Rumi Sang?
When the thirsty one seeks water
the water too seeks the thirsty
Thus our Master is not only the author of “Water Booth for the Thirsty;” he is that very water booth.
This is not to say that our Master is bereft of God - gifted miracles - the ‘Karaamat’. I have only played them down for the sake of emphasizing on his intellectual and Spiritual stature. You will find just a feq of them. Our Master have been shown recounted elsewhere in this book, Many seekers truth seekers in dream. They were astonished when they saw him later in person.
Right now his adherents do not number in millions; but a wind of his philosophy is prevailing in West, South and south - east Asia. It is the wind of change to the truest of religions in its truest form. God willing, the whole world shall start enjoying it.
